THE WATERMELON CHALLENGE…

THE WATERMELON CHALLENGE

For those in the challenge, and those following the progress

As we prepare to plant the seeds, some advise to ensure we get good fruits.

MAIN POINT:WATERMELON FEMALE FLOWERS ARE VIABLE FOR ONLY 1 DAY!

Mishapen fruit

This is a fruit disorder refered to ‘’mishapen fruit’’

Most of the farmers who experience the problem will have earlier on in the production program:

  • Either used  heavy chemicals eg class 1 in their crop protection programs especially at the criucial stage of plant flowering and fruiting-this detered  the pollinators from visiting the farm or killed the pollinators
  • Either done a high plant population per Ha(in the spirit of wanting more fruits per Ha!) thus affecting both the inter and intra row spacing-this had an impact on the pollination efficiency by the bees as most of the female flowers could be hidden such that by the end of the one viable day,the pollinator will not have efficiently/uniformly spread the pollen into the female flower

……..What esle could be the cause????

MAU FARMER HARVESTING TWO HEADS OF CABBAGE PER STEM

shooting after the first harvest

As much as seed companies give a direction on the production capabilities of certain seeds,it seems (as it has always been) it is the farmers who are the main sources on some of the crucial information to these companies which they later end up using to their advantage.

Q:How many heads do you get from one stem of the cabbage you plant.?

  • Some small and medium scale farmers in Mau Narok (Gatimu area) have devised a way of ensuring they get more! .after the first harvest, the stem is left to shoot and the deveopment of a new head is guaranteed,

Perhaps you should know which variety this is as well as try the one you are used to

SETTLING THE QUESTIONS,DEMONSTRATING THE PROGRAM,NETWORKING THE FARMERS

I have the honor to belong to 18 farming groups on watsapp (Not counting the ones i have “‘LEFT” . In most of the cases, I tend to ARCHIVE the messages because of the repetitive nature of the questions even after they have been answered, but as an agronomist, I do not blame the farmer, I know -seeing is believing, and regardless of the age of your memory, the photographic plate can always be refreshed by the act of seeing thus believing ,which thereafter triggers action which is implementation. The crops of interest have varied but the degree of interests have drifted towards the following crops

Watermelon”a crop of interest to most startups, with high returns ..do i transplant ofseed directly,do i need to break dorancy, how many fruits do i need per vine?…..”

                                 Onion

Onions:after harvesting the onions,do you know how to store it?  do you want big bulbs or small bulbs? how about the pungency..how many plans can be grown n an acre…….

                           Sweet pepper

Capsicum “Do i grow the colored ones or the green ones, which seed is good, how do i start, can i do direct planting?”

Some of the major questions in these fora include

  • Which is the best seed?
  • what is the difference between seed X and seed Y?
  • how does the *fruits of seeds X look like?
  • How do i  plant the seed.   and so on and so on……?
  • what do the buyers require?

Agroinfokenya has always and will always remain neutral in provision of such information with the most professional approach as well as farmer centric approach ,this includes ,not shying off from  communicating the negative attributes of any seed that does not live up to the standards (from the farmers responses /feedback)

IS IT THE PREPARED FARMER’S TIME TO ”EAT”?

Current potato prices are extremely good to warrant any new entrant to record this period as the best projected period for harvesting if one has to venture into potato production

The earlier any farmer realizes that the projections based on past planting history are currently rendered obsolete and cannot significantly function in the current era ,the better prepared the farmer will be in planning his/her planting program.

are you a potato farmer, what is your advise and what is your opinion?

this is not just going to happen to the potato farmers only, but some green maize farmers are also laughing all the way to the bank,at the same time, some farmers are praying hard for the fall armyworm menace to continue…..after all one mans predicament is another mans jackpot.Watch out for the maize prices too.

what is your take? are you prepared?

DO NOT BASE YOUR FARMING ON BEING REACTIVE TO THE PREVAILING PRICES BUT BE PROACTIVE IN THE MARKET SUPPLY CHAIN
